Five Most Expensive Food Items

1. Saffron
A spice derived from the flower of Crocus sativus, also known as the saffron crocus. This most expensive spice by weight is native to Soutwest asia and  90 percent of world production of saffron comes from Iran. Each flower's stigmas need to be collected by hand and there are only a few per flower, about half a kilogram of dry saffron is extracted from 75,000 flowers. Since it requires so much effort to procure and manufacture, the spice is priced around 1000 USD per kilogram.

2. Macadamia nut
Native to eastern Australia it is the world’s most expensive nut, and accounts for the delicious chocolates. The manufacturing alone is such a time-consuming process that it adds to the overall value and pricing of the nut. The macadamia tree is usually propagated by grafting, and does not begin to produce commercial quantities of nuts until it is 7–10 years old, but once established, may continue bearing for over 100 years. It requires fertile soil and very heavy rainfall. Its price exceeds INR 35 USD per kilogram.

3. Beluga Caviar
It is found primarily in the Caspian Sea. It can take up to 20 years to reach maturity. The fish harvested for caviar are often nearly 2,000 pounds (900 kg). A kilogram of Beluga Caviar costs more than 5000 USD.

4. White Truffle Mushroom
It comes from the Langhe and Montferrat areas[6] of the Piedmont region in northern Italy. It grows in the fertile Piedmont Region and lives up to reach 12 centimetres in diameter and nearly 500 grams in weight. As of December 2009 they were being sold at 14,203.50 USD per kilogram.

5. La Bonnotte
La Bonnotte is the world’s most expensive potato. With only 100 tonnes of this potato reared every year. These potatoes can only be grown in the presence of a rare seaweed fertilizer in a climate shaped by the sea. This rare climate and seaweed, incidentally, can only be found on the island Noirmoutier in France. One kilogram of La Bonnotte potatoes can reach $700.
